North Charleston, SC — Michelle Brandt has officially filed her candidacy for South Carolina’s House District 113, outlining a platform focused on addressing critical issues facing working families in the Lowcountry.
Brandt, an environmental scientist, community leader, wife, and mother, highlighted her priorities in a released statement. “I’m running to expand childcare options, create affordable housing programs, reduce gun violence, and make our streets safer,” she said. “These are critical issues that affect every family in District 113 and across South Carolina.”
Drawing from her personal experiences as a renter, Brandt emphasized the pressing need for affordable housing. Her proposed solutions include offering incentives to create homes at varied price points, establishing a renter’s tax credit, and promoting policies aimed at reducing housing costs.
Healthcare and childcare also rank high on Brandt’s agenda. She advocates for expanding Medicaid to ensure quality care for all South Carolinians and increasing access to childcare scholarships to benefit more families. Additionally, she proposes public-private partnerships to boost the availability of childcare options for working parents.
Brandt also plans to focus on infrastructure improvements in the district, supporting projects like the Lowcountry Rapid Transit system. She envisions the initiative as a way to alleviate traffic congestion, create affordable housing along transit corridors, and provide reliable transportation for residents.
Reducing gun violence in North Charleston is another priority for Brandt. Her approach includes addressing root causes through youth programs, such as after-school initiatives targeted at teenagers, to provide positive opportunities and reduce risk factors.
Brandt’s background includes leadership roles within the South Carolina Democratic Party and Planned Parenthood. Her experience in advocacy and public service has shaped her commitment to fighting for the priorities of District 113 residents.
“I believe in creating a South Carolina where every family has the support they need to thrive,” Brandt said. “District 113 deserves a representative who will fight tirelessly for safer neighborhoods, better opportunities for working parents, and fair, affordable housing for all.”
Brandt’s campaign will focus on building connections with voters throughout the district, ensuring their voices are represented in the State House.
