NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – In a unique ceremony held on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, Charleston County Sheriff Kristin Graziano deputized South Carolina native and singer-songwriter Edwin McCain at the Sheriff’s Office Headquarters in North Charleston. McCain, best known for his musical success, has also dedicated his life to sharing his personal battle with substance use disorder and advocating for sobriety.
McCain, who rose to fame as a musician in the 1990s, has since shifted focus to helping others overcome their struggles with addiction. In an exclusive interview with Sheriff Graziano, McCain reflected on his journey through the highs of rock and roll fame and the challenges that followed. “Nobody is too far gone,” McCain said, emphasizing that recovery is always possible. “As long as they’re still breathing, a comeback is possible.”
Sheriff Graziano praised McCain for using his platform to inspire others. “I’m not only a fan of his music, but everything he stands for,” she said. “He can show a lot of people in our community who are struggling with substance use disorder or who are in a mental health crisis that help is available and there is hope on the other side.”
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office shared the interview with McCain, hoping it will resonate with individuals in need of support. McCain, who attended the College of Charleston and spent part of his early life in the Lowcountry, expressed gratitude for being able to help those facing similar battles to his own.
McCain’s message of recovery, paired with his role as a newly deputized figure in Charleston County, aims to offer hope and resources to those struggling with addiction and mental health crises.
